I recently saw Christian Marclay's 1995 video work titled "Telephones," at SITE Santa Fe in New Mexico. It "utilizes an archive of film clips from Hollywood film history, recreating the scenario of the human encounter with the telephone in all its manifestations."

I also recently saw Marclay's work on the following iPhone commercial, in which Apple uses Marclay's idea without his permission.

Marclay says "This culture’s so much about suing each other that if we want to have anything that’s more of an open exchange of ideas, one has to stop this mentality. I’m just honored that they thought my work was interesting enough that they felt they could just rip it off.”

Highlights from my recent creative activity include the short documentary film titled Back to Love. This project is in collaboration with Kurt Lancaster (www.KurtLancaster.com). It is about a shamanic artist in Sedona, Cher Lyn (www.mysticartmedicine.com) who heals her abusive childhood through painting. The editing of this project was completed at the end of October. The film will be distributed through film festivals in the coming year.

The Rock-afire Explosion was an animatronic robot band that played in Showbiz Pizza Place restaurants from 1980 to 1991...The stage was designed to be life-sized. Unlike many small novelty animatronic shows, the Rock-afire was designed to take up the entire length of the showroom. The stage was split into three sections, with the band in the center section and other characters on the two side sections each with separate curtains. Differing from their main competitor (Chuck E. Cheese's), the characters could mimic playing real instruments and had realistic facial expressions due to the use of latex masks (as used in Disney animatronics) as opposed to fabric and foam. The show also used a large amount of props and stage lighting effects which heightened the amount of perceived movement on the stage.

"Burlesque is a humorous theatrical entertainment involving parody and sometimes grotesque exaggeration. Prior to Burlesque becoming associated with striptease, it was a form of musical and theatrical parody in which an opera or piece of classical theatre is adapted in a broad, often risqué style very different from that for which it was originally known."

I am curious to discover more about the inner workings of this performance genre and to share with you the mindset of contemporary burlesque performers. For now, here is a story about The 2008 New York Burlesque Festival, and a Loie Fuller inspired performance by Vicky Butterfly.

Green

"Green" is a documentary film that will screen at the 2009 Durango Independent Film Festival March 4th-8th. Using a strong visual storytelling structure and a creative sound bed, this film documents the last moments of a female orangutan's life.

We first see the orangutan, who we'll later learn is named Green, in a duffel bag with head hanging out, riding in the back of a pickup truck. This initial shot is emotionally shocking and lasts for what feels like a full minute or more. The viewer has no context of the circumstances. I wasn't sure it was alive.

Shortly after, we discover that the form of this film is absent of interviews and narration. In fact, not many words are heard throughout the entire piece. The narrative proceeds with a dissolve, from the bed-sickened Green into her life memories. We experience a lush jungle and rich ecosystem, full of primates and other wildlife.

The filmmaker uses point-of-view and dutch-angle shots to place us into the orangutan's perspective. As the story continues, Green's perspective is juxtaposed with the process of development destroying her home through deforestation to biodiesel production. It's a gradual transition into the harsh reality of globalization. The forest is destroyed, primates suffer, palm oil is manufactured, and the fast-paced urban world seems oblivious.

"Her name is Green, she is alone in a world which doesn't belong to her. She is a female orangutan, victim of deforestation and palm oil plantations." (short synopsis)

"Green's" heart-felt message addresses our current global crisis through a universal lens. This well-constructed, cinematic story is a must-see at DIFF this year.

For our final in Digital Media Production, I arranged for the students projects to have a public exhibition.

Despite the snowstorm Monday night, there was a great turn out for "Student Shorts" at the Abbey Theatre, Durango, CO. Out of the 10 films shown, the 4 documentaries at the end of the program were the best of what was offered.

"Conquering the Mushroom Drop" (RT: 9 min directed by Alan Edwards) is the story of Thomas Lep's attempts at landing a 25' cliff drop on a mountain bike. "Kitchen Connection" (RT: 11 min directed by Amy Brothers) is an exploration of student's feeling of disconnection between college live and the greater Durango area, mainly the Manna Soup Kitchen community. "Between the Sun and the Moon Lies a Human Thread" (RT: 15 min directed by Cassandra Yazzie) addresses young Native Americans struggling with 21st century identity. The film includes a story of a murder that was related to the victim's inability to sing powwow songs despite his long hair. And finally, "Growing Roots" (RT: 15 min directed by Brian Barnes) follows Katrina Blair, founder of Turtle Lake Refuge, while exploring the unique connection between community, wild ecology and raw foods.

After each of the documentaries the filmmakers introduced themselves and answered a few question from the audience. At the end of the event we enjoyed raw, acorn milk provided by Turtle Lake. This event received supportive, positive response both from the community and the students. I hope to do it again at the end of the winter semester.

Presidential Debate Schedule

As a reminder to myself and all who will be voting this November- here's the debate format and schedule:

1. First Presidential Debate:
Date: September 26 – Site: University of Mississippi – Topic: Foreign Policy & National Security – Moderator: Jim Lehrer – Staging: Podium debate – Answer Format: The debate will be broken into nine, 9-minute segments. The moderator will introduce a topic and allow each candidate 2 minutes to comment. After these initial answers, the moderator will facilitate an open discussion of the topic for the remaining 5 minutes, ensuring that both candidates receive an equal amount of time to comment

2. Vice Presidential Debate
Date: October 2nd – Site: Washington University (St. Louis) – Moderator: Gwen Ifill – Staging/Answer Format: Debate will consist of both foreign and domestic policy questions asked by the moderator. Format will be similar to the presidential debates.

3. Second Presidential Debate
Date: October 7 – Site: Belmont University – Moderator: Tom Brokaw – Staging: Town Hall debate – Format: The moderator will call on members of the audience (and draw questions from the internet). Each candidate will have 2 minutes to respond to each question. Following those initial answers, the moderator will invite the candidates to respond to the previous answers, for a total of 1 minute, ensuring that both candidates receive an equal amount of time to comment. In the spirit of the Town Hall, all questions will come from the audience (or internet), and not the moderator.

4. Third Presidential Debate
Date: October 15 – Site: Hofstra University – Topic: Domestic and Economic Issues – Moderator: Bob Schieffer – Staging: Candidates will be seated at a table – Answer Format: Same as First Presidential Debate – Closing Statements: At the end of this debate (only) each candidate shall have the opportunity for a 90 second closing statement.

All four debates will begin at 9pm ET, 6pm PT and last for 90 minutes. Both campaigns also agreed to accept the CPD’s participation rules for third-party candidate participation. Third-party candidates will be included if they poll 15% or above in at least 5 national polls.

Each debate will be broadcast on the major broadcast networks, including CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX. They will also be aired on cable news channels such as CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and C-SPAN.

I have not been posting as much recently for 2 reasons (1) because my research has been primarily focused on media issues particularly around the election and not in the sculpting of Performance Cinema as an emerging form, and (2) because I have been immersed in developing my academic career. So for the time being, I will now take a broader scope into this blog's frame to include news relating to our current political climate as well as general research on media issues.

It is pointed out here that the narrative being created by political and media systems contain the fundamental elements of an entertainment drama, perhaps even a comedy. This idea of a hockey mom, through an unlikely sequence of events, becomes our commander-and-chief, is now a very real possibility. Our main character uses the tricks of being a mother of five, a big game hunter, and a beauty queen to lead her country.

This is the scenario being proposed. But will she be able to successfully deal with the challenging issues our country and our world face in the 21st century? Perhaps this story will sell in the box office, but as a reality, Americans are being challenged to enhance their awareness and media skills in order to see the ways they are being seduced by this powerful narrative.
